Pyros 2k11 – National Technical Fest at Mangalam College

Mangalam College of Engineering , Kottayam is organizing a National level technical fest on January 10 and 11 . The technical fest is titled ‘ Pyros 2k11 ‘. The event will be platform for students to test their intellect and technical  as well as non technical skills  and win some amazing prices. The chief guest of the event will be Dr. G Madhavan Nair  Former chairman of ISRO.

The events are :

Encuesta : A general Quiz Competition for School Students . Registration fee Rs. 100 . Prizes Worth Rs. 8000

Preliminary : 10 am – 11 am

Finals : 2pm – 4pm

Talentine : Project expo . Team of 4 b tech students  can submit working projects. prizes worth Rs. 7000.

Demo : 9 30 am – 12.30 pm

Presentation : 1.30 pm – 3 30 pm

Cimico : C- debugging . 6 Teams  of 2 members will be chosen for the finals.

Intrige : Web-designing  Competition . Team of 2 can design website with the facilities provided by the organizers . Prizes worth Rs. 7000.

Colosseum : Network Gaming . Counter Strike gaming with a team of 4. Prizes worth Rs. 9000.

Time : 10 am

Inferno : Online Treasure hunt. A race against time and intelligence . This is an individual event. Prizes worth Rs. 4000.

Talbot : Photography competition based on a theme given on spot.Prizes worth Rs. 3000.

Alegria : Dance Competition. A team of 5- 8 members can get a chance to win prizes worth Rs. 12000.

Malayalam Wikipedia Learning workshop @ Kottayam

Malayalam Wikipedia is organizing a learning workshop  at Baker Memorial higher secondary school on October 30th starting from afternoon 1.00 . Every one who is interested in Malayalam wiki can participate in this event.

The event will be A to Z  learning workshop starting from the general intro to editing wiki and article writing. The event is organized by IT @ School , Kottayam.

Barcamp Kerala 9 to be held at Amritapuri Campus

Barcamp kerala is back. The 9th edition of BarCamp Kerala (BCK9), will be held at Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, Amritapuri Campus at Karunagapally on 14th November 2010.

Reading both Barcamp and Karunagapally together, one can easily misunderstand Barcamp as ‘Bar’ Camp.  Fortunately, Barcamp is something entirely different.

BarCamp is an ad-hoc unconference born from the desire for people to share and learn in an open environment. It is an intense event with discussions, demos and interaction from attendees. Anyone with something to contribute or with the desire to learn is welcome and invited to join. There are no registration fees or any charges for a Barcamp as this is a user-generated conference. You are invited to volunteer for various activities for putting up a successful camp.

This is not exclusively for techies. This is a meet up of Expert techies, beginners and  those who are interested in these subjects but not really into the technology.

Free Software Meet at St. Joseph’s College

Swathanthra, a Free Software Users Group initiative by St. Joseph’s College of Engineering & Technology, Palai, will be launched officially by Richard M. Stallman, father of Free Software movement on 9th September, 2010 at 10:30 am. The event is titled Swathanthra 1.0.

The mission of the users group is to spread knowledge about free software and also to promote the usage of GNU/Linux OS among students and public.

After the Inaugurals Richard M. Stallman will deliver a lecture on the ‘Free Software and your Freedom’, which campaigns for freedom so that computer users can control their own computing activities. The Free Software Movement developed the GNU operating system specifically to establish these freedoms.

As part of the event seminars and exhibitions on free software and evolution of free software will be organized.

Seminar on ‘Question of Identity and contemporary politics’ in Kottayam

Social Science students’ forum is conducting a one day seminar on “Question of Identity and contemporary politics” on august 11th at school of sciences, Pularikunnu campus, Kottayam.

The Seminar is mainly intended to collect Responses from eminent Academics and students about widely discussing concept of Identity Politics in the cultural sphere of Kerala.

The programme will be chaired by Dr. P Sanal Mohan.  Mr. Sunny M. Kapikkadu, Dr. Sunil P Elayidom, Dr. Shamsad Husain, and Dr. P Geetha will be there in the panel of presentations from different perspectives.

Mr. Dileep Raj (Writer, Thinker), Dr. K.M Sheeba (Sanskrit University) and Mr. K.K Baburaj (Writer, Thinker) will respond to the presentations.

The proposed seminar will address multifaceted aspects of these issues in an engaging manner. The Seminar is expected to bring together scholars who are actively engaged in such discussions on Kerala.

Aranmula Vallam Kali to be held on august 27

The land of Snake boats and Snake boat races, Aranmula is having yet another festive season. Onam season is the wakeup call for the people of Aranmula as they celebrate the festive season so grand. The festival of snake boats will start on July 31st and will extend for two months.

The famous ‘Aranmula Uthrattathi Vallam Kali’ will be conducted on august 27th. Around 42 boats are expected to participate in the race representing 42 places in Aranmula. This cultural event has a history of around 1000 years. The event will be covered by 7 channels and will be broadcasted live.

The ‘Vallam kali’ attracts tourists from all around the globe. Around 3 lakh spectators including visitors from other countries have always been attending this event.

It means the valley where leaves don’t fall .The place is so named because there are no trees to shed their leaves .One of the best place to watch the beauty of sunset and sunrise, is located at a distance of 55 kms from Kottayam .The place is surrounded by three enchanting hillocks mankunnu, Kodayathoormala and thonippara.

During monsoons the valley fills up with water form a lake. The duality of the place makes it a must watch tourist attraction.

Kumarakom – the Ultimate Scenic Beauty

When nature is all you need to relax and to be in a peaceful state, the most apt place to visit would be Kumarakom. Paddy fields where eyes can’t reach till its ending, lagoons, backwaters and mangroves .Kumarakom is rich in its wide flora and fauna. Kumarakaom bird sanctuary is a noted bird sanctuary where many species of migrating birds visit.

Another attraction at kumarakom is its wide variety of houseboats. Kettuvallams which were used to transport cargos in the past where modified into elegant house boats some of which is even better than the presidential suite of top hotels. Another festive event in Kumarakom is Kumarakom boat race. Different types of boats known by different names take part in the boat race during the Onam season. Kumarakom was declared as the special tourism zone in 2005.

Vagamon-the mind healing hill station

Vagamon is hill station located about 64 kilometers from kottayam town in the kottayam-idukki border. Around 1100 meters above sea level, it is a famous trekking station.

Vagamon has its own place in Kerala tourism, tea industry as well as diary industry. The hills of vagamon are covered with tea plantations and lush green meadows which makes it ideal place for the diary industry to flourish. Indo Swiss diary farms are is situated on the hill.

Vagamon is surrounded by three hills namely, Thangal hill, Murugan hill, and Kurisumala. Kurisumala is a famous hill station and pilgrimage center for Christians where cross is put up in every sub hill station.

Other attractions include pine forests, grasslands, shola forest and the famous suicide point of Thangal hill. The specialty of vagamon is due to its varied climate and cold atmosphere even at midday of summer which is greatly soothing and gives u a peaceful mood.

The pines forest or vagamon are so attracting and will make you forget all your worldly worries.  The view of the pine forests are so inviting so that it is one of the most popular shooting locations of south Indian cinema.

Adventure sports and sustainable tourism academy which supports adventurous sports like paragliding has conducted various training programs in vagamon .The geography for vagamon is so appropriate for such adventurous sport. Vagamon has hosted several international paragliding training events.
